Why becoming a Certified B Corporation® meant more to me than a certification
If you’d told me three years ago that one of the proudest moments in my business journey would be becoming a Certified B Corporation®, I’d probably have laughed.
Not because I didn’t believe in what B Corp stands for, quite the opposite.
It was because I spent far too long convincing myself I wasn’t ready.
As the founder of People Finding Consultancy in Worthing, West Sussex, I’ve always believed recruitment should be about more than filling vacancies. It should help businesses grow responsibly, create opportunities for people to thrive and leave organisations stronger than they were before.
Those beliefs have shaped every decision I’ve made since launching my business.
Yet despite knowing that my values aligned so closely with the B Corp movement, I procrastinated.
Why I kept putting my B Corp application off
If I’m honest, the biggest barrier wasn’t the application itself.
It was me.
I worried I wasn’t sustainable enough.
I questioned whether my business was making enough impact.
I wondered if I’d spend hours completing the B Impact Assessment only to discover I wasn’t good enough.
Looking back, I realise I was searching for validation rather than recognising the work I’d already done.
Like many small business owners, I was so focused on what I hadn’t achieved that I completely overlooked everything I had.
What becoming a Certified B Corporation® actually means
One of the things I love most about the B Corp community is that it doesn’t expect perfection.
A Certified B Corporation® is a business that has been verified by B Lab as meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.
Certification isn’t a one off achievement.
It’s an ongoing commitment to measuring your impact, identifying where you can improve and continually raising the bar.
That mindset resonated with me immediately because it’s exactly how I approach recruitment.
There is always an opportunity to learn, improve and create a better experience for everyone involved.
Recruitment with purpose in Worthing and across Sussex
People Finding Consultancy supports founder led and values driven businesses throughout Worthing, West Sussex, Sussex and beyond.
From the beginning, I’ve chosen to work differently.
Rather than acting as an external recruitment agency, I become an extension of each client’s business, taking time to understand their culture, values and long term ambitions before introducing the right people.
For me, recruitment has never been about making the quickest placement.
It’s about creating meaningful connections that benefit both the business and the individual for years to come.
That philosophy sat comfortably alongside everything I learned during my B Corp journey.
The application taught me as much as the certification
Completing the B Impact Assessment encouraged me to look at my business through a completely different lens.
It challenged me to think about governance, community, environmental impact, customers and the way I operate every single day.
Some areas gave me confidence because they reflected work I was already doing.
Others highlighted opportunities to improve, and I genuinely welcomed that.
One of the biggest lessons was that impact isn’t reserved for large organisations with dedicated sustainability teams.
Small businesses have enormous influence because every decision matters.
Small changes really do create meaningful impact
Since founding People Finding Consultancy I’ve believed that business should be a force for good.
Becoming a Certified B Corporation® has strengthened that commitment even further.
Alongside delivering ethical and thoughtful recruitment, I donate 2% of sales to Sight Support Worthing, helping to support local people living with sight loss, because creating positive impact should extend beyond the businesses I work with.
It’s a reminder that even relatively small actions can contribute to something much bigger.
Why this matters to my clients
Many of the businesses I work with care deeply about their people, their communities and the legacy they’re building.
They don’t simply want to recruit someone to fill a role.
They want to make thoughtful decisions that strengthen their business for the future.
Working with a Certified B Corporation® gives them confidence that they’re partnering with a business whose commitment to responsible business practices has been independently verified.
For me, though, the certification is only the beginning.
The real work happens every day through the conversations I have, the people I support and the businesses I help to grow.
My biggest takeaway
The lesson I wish I’d learned much sooner is this.
Don’t wait until you think you’re perfect before taking the next step.
If your business genuinely cares about people, your community and creating positive impact, then beginning the journey is worthwhile in itself.
For me, becoming a Certified B Corporation® wasn’t about collecting another badge.
It was about finding a community that reflects the way I’ve always believed business should be done.
And after spending so long wondering whether I was good enough, I couldn’t be prouder to be part of it.
Building a business with purpose?
Becoming a Certified B Corporation® reinforced something I’d believed from the very beginning, that business can be commercially successful while creating a positive impact for people, communities and the planet.
If you’re looking for a recruitment partner who shares those values, or you’re simply interested in chatting about ethical recruitment or the B Corp journey, I’d love to hear from you.
